The House
The museum Mother Beethoven House in Ehrenbreitstein houses an exhibition on the biography of Ludwig van Beethoven’s mother in Ehrenbreitstein and Bonn as well as the composer’s relationships with Koblenz and Koblenz’s musical life in the 18th and 19th century. Graphics and paintings, everyday objects, instruments and archival materials are shown in the original and as facsimiles. Depictions of Beethoven and his mother in the art of the 20th and 21st century are also presented.
As this is the birthplace of the famous artist’s mother it is the right place to keep alive the rich cultural history of Ehrenbreitstein, to raise awareness of the stay of Beethoven’s ancestors in Ehrenbreitstein and to keep alive the history of the house itself in a sophisticated and attractive way.
Content of the permanent exhibition:
- History of Ehrenbreitstein as an electoral residence town
- The Keverich family as servants at the electoral court
- Women’s life in the 18th century
- Music at the electoral court
- Beethoven’s youth
- Beethoven’s friendship with Franz Gerhard Wegeler
- Testimonials from the Wegeler family
- Music culture during the age of Biedermeier
In order to sustainably revitalize the museum, but also the associated chamber music hall, activities and events are carried out that are dedicated to music, art, literature, monument preservation and history. The house is to be further enriched by purchasing exhibits.
Since the city of Koblenz as the owner of the house and the Middle Rhine Museum as its operator are both under financial restrictions, help from sponsors from the community is necessary. We, the “sponsors of the museum Mother Beethoven House” want to contribute to this and we are pleased to welcome you as a new member (see declaration of membership).
The Middle Rhine Museum Koblenz is the “host” of the Mother Beethoven House. At the side of its director Dr. Matthias von der Bank a small, professional team works on optimizing the MBH ensemble.
Dr. Silke Bettermann is the curator who also works for the Beethoven House in Bonn. The museum’s art expert, restorer Thomas Hardy, ensures a sophisticated look.
